The atmosphere at Excelsior Middle and High School is similar to a typical small high school. Classes are offered in four basic academic areas: math, English, social studies and science. Electives include art, music, home economics, physical education, computers, and others.

Our students participate in physical education curriculum and interscholastic high school athletics in basketball and volleyball.

Our Excelsior school has a faculty of 45 which includes a principal, teachers, teaching assistants, educational diagnosticians, foster grandparents, vice principals and support staff. The school positions are important because learning is valued, not only for personal enrichment but for future survival and success.

Traditional subjects, learning and reinforcement of basic communication, living skills, and exposure to vocation and career possibilities are essential to adequate preparation for life.

"My teachers' style is motivation for me to work hard at different subjects. Mr. Brown (English teacher) is always mixing up different ways for us to learn, like audio tapes, movies, and note-taking. Mrs. Bruce-Andrews is always giving us interesting projects to work on to bring [the events] to life."

School staff members are responsible for preparing our students to live responsibly in a democratic society. Along with this, teachers have the responsibility to help the student progress toward her fullest potential.

Faculty members are responsible for enhancing basic skills in reading, writing and math; to offer exciting high interest classes to stimulate curiosity and practical application of skills along with vocational exploration. They adapt teaching styles and strategies to the individual differences and needs of the students.

Educational Goals of Faculty include:

  • Improve self-image and motivation.
  • Broaden knowledge of the world.
  • Improve literacy and life skills.
  • Change and grow.
  • Teach for the future.
  • Develop critical thinking.
  • Prepare for an ever-changing society.
  • Encourage skills in creative areas.
