Of our 300 staff members, 155 are employed as Direct Care Counselors. The counselor positions are very important because of the amount of direct contact with the clients.

Direct Care Counselors are responsible for providing to our clients a safe, nurturing and therapeutic environment. Along with this, Counselors provide adult guidance, supervision and instruction for daily living and socialization activities.

Counselors have a very important role of assisting the clients in the practical application and use of the information gained in formal therapy sessions with their Primary Therapists.

The counselor helps teach the client to accept responsibility for her attitudes and behaviors; to teach alternatives to negative behaviors; to develop socialization and leadership skills; and to improve self-esteem. In doing so, counselors must enforce rules and behavior expectations in a firm, fair and consistent manner.

Direct Care Counselors work with the girls individually and in various group sessions to help the clients practice and internalize these new skills. Counselors also produce lots of written work including: reports to caseworkers, letters to parents and cottage documents.
