Ron & Gail
Bard: Excelsior's Spiritual Tag Team

Ron & Gail Bard |
"We're the ones who are blessed that so many of the girls are
attracted to our message. They just keep coming. They're searching
for answers from their pasts," say Ron & Gail Bard, Excelsior's
Directors of Religious Activities for the past 25 years.
"We've built a reputation among the girls and we listen and
teach within the context of the Bible. We invite the girls to THINK
and QUESTION in our non-denominational, voluntary programs,"
says Ron. "Why are we both still here after all these years?
It's a calling. And we love the kids! No regrets."
The 70-ish couple conduct a weekly Sunday morning service with
music and fellowship that attracts 35-50 girls and two Bible study
classes during the week. Additionally, they offer one-on-one spiritual
counseling when asked. "The kids are very attentive and respectful,"
says Gail "We respect the girls and we expect it in return."
Additionally, the Bards make arrangements for off-campus holidays
and services of other faiths that include Jewish and Muslim girls.
Though originally from the East Coast, the Bards have lived in
the Denver community since 1978. Quite the learned man, Ron has
a BA in accounting, MA in Communications; MA in Divinity; a Law
Degree and PhD in Public Policy. He served as a State Representative
in the Connecticut State Legislature for 4 terms from 1967-75. A
Registered Nurse, Gail has shared Ron's lifelong love and involvement
in ministry. The couple raised their 4 children in suburban Denver:
Gretchen, Kristen, Mike and Josh and now they enjoy lots of grandchildren,
too. A fun side note: Josh is the catcher for the San Diego Padres
Baseball Club.
The Bards were introduced to Excelsior 25 years ago by EYC founder
Dick Jones who wanted to retain a spiritual aspect of Excelsior's
treatment program. What to say to Dick Jones after all these years?
"Thank you! We will stay at Excelsior as long as we're physically
able! We're privileged to be the spiritual wing of this exceptional
residential treatment center."
